CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

LILLIANA POURED WATER onto the soil of the white Russian hybrid, gave it a moment to drain through, then turned the pot ninety degrees. The plants on her quarantine shelf were all looking healthy, thank goodness. She’d leave them there for a few weeks before moving them to a shelf near her regular collection.

As she continued on to the next plant, her thoughts turned to Grace’s revelation. She’d urged the teacher to find somewhere safe to go, or at least report her fears to Chief Cartwright, but Grace had been more afraid of public opinion than her husband. Lilliana shook her head. The idea of dying being preferable to shame was hard for her to come to grips with.

Grace had driven her back to the retirement home not too long after her confession, promising to get more flower pots to her within a month. She asked if Lilliana thought the retirement home might like to hold another pottery class. She talked about some of the children in her classes as if the discussion about the affair had never happened. And hanging in the air all that time was the unspoken, almost unthinkable, suspicion that Nick could very well have killed Geoffrey Cameron.

Lilliana startled at the familiar knock on her front door. Surely it couldn’t be dinner time already? She hurried to let Christopher in.

“Good evening,” he said with a warm smile. He looked at the watering can in one hand and the smudges of potting soil on both. “Did I interrupt you in your labors?”

“I didn’t realize how late it had gotten. Come in while I wash up.” She returned the watering can to her plant room and made a brief stop in the bathroom before rejoining him.

“How was your golf game?” she asked as they walked down the hall.

He made a sour face. “I’ve played better. Frank almost beat me. I’m going to have to stop giving him pointers.”

Lilliana laughed. “Why do men have to make everything a competition?”

“What’s the point of playing unless you think you can win?” he countered with an incredulous stare.

By this time, they’d reached the dining room. Lilliana spied Frank and Nancy seated at a nearby table.

“Shall we eat with your golf rival?” she asked.

“That’s fine with me.”

Once they were seated with their food, Nancy asked, “Where have you been all day, Lilliana?”

“Oh, here and there,” she said vaguely.

Nancy’s eyes narrowed. “I bet you’ve been solving our latest murder.”

Lilliana felt a bit flustered. Was she so transparent?

“You have, haven’t you?” Nancy said.

“Do you know who the killer is yet?” Frank asked.

She supposed there was nothing for it but to tell them what she’d learned. Except the part about Grace. “I did visit with Penny Cameron today. As you can expect, she’s still shocked and depressed.” She paused to eat a piece of her chicken parmesan.

Nancy nodded. “Is she a suspect?”

“I don’t think so. She and Geoff had their difficulties, as all married couples do, but I don’t think she killed him. Even if
